What is Waterproofing? Common Waterproofing methods in Malaysia

Waterproofing is a crucial aspect of construction and maintenance that involves the application of materials and techniques to prevent water intrusion into various structures. Whether it’s a residential building, commercial property, or infrastructure projects like bridges and tunnels, waterproofing plays a pivotal role in ensuring longevity and structural integrity.

Water intrusion can cause significant damage to buildings and infrastructure over time. It can lead to structural weakening, mold growth, corrosion of metal reinforcements, and compromise the safety and usability of the structure. In regions like Malaysia that are prone to heavy rainfall, flooding, or high humidity, the need for effective waterproofing becomes even more critical to mitigate these risks and maintain the durability of the structures.

How does Waterproofing work?

Waterproofing involves the application of various materials and techniques to create a barrier against water intrusion and seepages. The primary goal is to prevent moisture from penetrating into the building envelope or structural elements. This can be achieved through different methods tailored to specific areas such as roofs, foundations, basements, walls, and floors.

The common Waterproofing methods

1. Membrane and “Torch-On” Waterproofing

Membrane systems involve the application of thin layers of waterproofing materials such as bitumen, PVC, EPDM (ethylene propylene diene terpolymer), or TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) sheets. These membranes are installed on surfaces to form a continuous barrier against water intrusion. Membrane waterproofing is commonly used for roofs, basements, and below-grade structures.

2. Cementitious Waterproofing

Cementitious waterproofing involves the application of cement-based coatings or admixtures to concrete surfaces. These materials penetrate the pores of the concrete, forming a waterproof barrier. Cementitious waterproofing is often used for walls, foundations, and water tanks.

3. Liquid Waterproofing Membranes

Liquid membranes are applied as liquid coatings that cure to form a seamless, flexible membrane. These membranes can be sprayed, rolled, or brushed onto various surfaces, providing excellent adhesion and durability. Liquid waterproofing is versatile and suitable for both horizontal and vertical applications.

4. Integral Waterproofing

Integral waterproofing involves adding waterproofing admixtures directly into concrete or mortar mixes during the mixing process. These admixtures chemically react with the concrete, forming a crystalline structure that blocks water penetration. Integral waterproofing enhances the durability and waterproofing capabilities of concrete structures.

Which Waterproofing method is the best?

Waterproofing is a critical aspect of construction and maintenance aimed at protecting structures from water damage and ensuring their longevity and structural integrity. By employing various methods and materials, waterproofing professionals can create effective barriers against water intrusion in buildings, infrastructure, and other construction projects, safeguarding them against the detrimental effects of moisture. Investing in proper waterproofing measures is essential for the sustainability and durability of structures in the long run.

There is no one method that is better over the other. Each method has its own strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, it is important to first determine the cause of the water intrusion and leakages through proper diagnosis and testing to then apply the right effective waterproofing method.
